Artificial Art Ensemble 2 Poo-Bah Record Shop (www.poohbah.com) 2636 E. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91107 Saturday, December 5th 2009, 4PM (Freddie Johnson - bass, Ted Byrnes - drums and percussion, Rich West - drums and percussion, Andy Seven - tenor saxophone, The Professor - alto saxophone, & Ace Farren Ford - soprano saxophone, suona, pocket trumpet) Freddie Johnson is one of the most in demand bassists of the area, putting in many years with local bluesman Rob Rio, and has played with everyone from the Mystery Band to Dread Zeppelin to Big Jay McNeeley. He has also spent some years supplying the airwaves with jazz. Ted Byrnes is a drummer / percussionist living in Los Angeles. With musical interests ranging from electro-acoustic to funk to gamelan to the singular beauty of everyday ambient sounds, Ted’s playing is often viewed as more textural or even melodic than rhythmic per se, and generally uses a ‘prepared’ drum kit. This expanded array of sounds – much more than what a traditional drum kit would contain – forces the listener into hearing, and viewing, drumset playing in a different way. Recent performances include mapping sound - SASSAS' 10th anniversary concert, LACMA's ArtWalk 2009, and accompanying seminal Fluxus artist Jeff Perkins' light show at the studio of Evan Holloway and at the Eighth Veil Gallery in Los Angeles. "As a longtime part of the Southern California new music scene, percussionist/composer Rich West regularly collaborates with key local players such as Jeff Kaiser, Bonnie Barnett, Vinny Golia, Lynn Johnston, Bruce Friedman." Rich West has collaborated with Ace Farren Ford with the Easter Meets West, er… Ensemble in 2006, and Ace appears as a guest vocalist for a track on Rich’s newest cd “Mayo Grout’s Known Universe on the pfMENTUM lable. Andy Seven for years was the driving force behind Cockfight and Trash Can School and one time blew his tenor with Crowbar Salvation. He collaborated with Ace on Savage Pencil’s Ether Hogg cd in 1994. The Professor is the Duce of LAFMS co-founding ensemble Ace & Duce. Ace & Duce have been contributing to the outskirts of improvised music since 1971. That said, it must be noted that his public performances have been very rare indeed. Ace Farren Ford is a scoundrel who has insisted on sticking his nose into as many odd music ensembles as he can, and has lately begun building them for sake of a singular occasion with the Artificial Art Ensemble. This is the second of what he hopes will be a host of specially chosen ensembles to showcase the diverse array of fabulous and colorful musicians he has come to know. He was an original member of Smegma, the Los Angeles Free Music Society and many groups too numerous to mention.
